The European Commission has announced the first results of its new €3bn Horizon 2020 SME Instrument, and OPTIS is one of the 23 French SMEs selected for funding after the evaluation of the first cut-off date of Phase 1. The SME Instrument was launched under Horizon 2020 to help innovative small firms get ideas from the lab to the market. OPTIS is thus part of the 155 first projects selected for funding on the 2 662 project proposals already submitted from all over Europe.

The project submitted by OPTIS is named PLATON, after the French name of the famous Greek philosopher, as a symbol of wisdom. This is also an homage to the Allegory of the Cave, where Plato started to outline the idea of virtual reality, with a cave where the evidences of the senses are induced by a series of illusions. In the OPTIS’ project, PLATON stands for PLATform fOr iNteroperable multiphysics digital mock-up, and aims to create a software development platform for the next generation of OPTIS simulation tools for virtual dynamic mock-ups. Jacques Delacour, OPTIS CEO, says:

This kind of initiative is important to develop business innovation more easily, and I’m pleased that our PLATON project was selected during this first phase. Developing disruptive technology, in particular, requires important means to finalize a solution targeting a worldwide market. This SME Instrument is perfectly fitted to growing SMEs evolving in a fast-moving environment, just as OPTIS."

This first phase will allow to validate the feasibility of the project and identify both technological and marketing bottlenecks, on which efforts will be focused during the further development of the global project.
